Autobiography

R.S. Isaac Gardner, M.D. graduated from Princeton University in 1960, with a Chemistry major. He attended New York University School of Medicine and graduated in 1964. He spent a year of research in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Dr. Severo Ochoa. This lead to publication of two research papers in collaboration with others leading to the deciphering of the genetic code. After graduating from medical school, he participated in a St. Medicine internship at Stanford School of Medicine. This was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Biochemistry under Nobel Laureate, Dr. Arthur Kornberg, with studies of bacterial sporulation as a model of differentiation initiated. Following the postdoctoral fellowship, two years were spent at the National Institute of Health under Dr. Gordon Tompkins. Studies on steroid hormone receptors lead to the discovery of hormone blockers. Following this fellowship, Dr. Gardner completed a residency in internal medicine and postdoctoral fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at Washington University in St. Louis, under Carl V. Moore, M.D. and David Kipnis, M. D. (1968 to 1970). He then practiced clinical endocrinology in a group practice for two years. Thereafter, he joined the faculty of the University of Iowa in the Dept. of Endocrinology and pursued endocrine research in thyroid hormone receptors, from 1972 to 1976.He discovered that these receptors bind to specific segments of the DNA. Following four years at the University of Iowa, Dr. Gardner entered a psychiatric residency at the University of California, San Diego. After graduating in 1979, he moved to Santa Rosa, CA and established a private practice of psychoneuroendocrinology. He has continued his involvement with teaching by instructing family practice residents in endocrinology at the Sutter Family Practice Clinic in Santa Rosa.
